Chapel Digging Party

chapel digging party

This newspaper article shows a digging party in action to ‘save’ the chapel from being flooded. But we are not really sure where they are digging!  Can anyone enlighten us? Unfortunately the newspaper clip is undated but we think it is possibly early 1960s?

As far as we know the men in the photograph are as follows (from left to right):

Jack Green, Harry Rogers, Les Green, Reg Clarke, Wilf Miller (known as ‘Knock’), Les Rogers and Bert Walker.

(Newspaper clip: Jane Williams).

Yes, I can confirm it’s Reg Clarke! He was my great uncle and it was part of a chapel digging party! I don’t remember Stan Loveday being involved in any Chapel working party.
This was a ditch digging project, digging between the carpark and Rogers’ field on the left of the chapel as you are looking at it from the road.
I very vaguely remember this, being on site with my Dad, Bob, and it must have been a Saturday morning, because this was the only time so many working men would have had time to do this. Thinking back, it’s probably in the 50s, when I spent as much of the weekend with Dad as possible. Before Sally muscled in!

That’s great Jane – thank you for that. Do you have any idea why they were digging it? I presume perhaps the water was coming off the fields and threatening to flood the chapel?
