Dancing round the Maypole

maypole dancing

I hope you were out at the crack of dawn this morning to wash in the morning dew to preserve your youth and dancing round your maypoles! I remember dancing round the maypole in Chrishall old school playground, although how the pole was held up I can’t remember. I think there may have been some contraption to hold it.

However we also have this video clip of maypole dancing. The film was certainly taken by Mr Nelson, school teacher at the old school, but whether this is definitely Chrishall we can’t currently be sure. If it is, then it seems to be on Jigneys meadow which would certainly have been easier for fixing a pole in the ground. And is that Mrs Nelson crowning the May Queen? If you can make anything out of these rather grainy images then we would love to know. Happy May Day!
