Eustace Hooper - War Memorial, Windrush, Gloucestershire

Eustace Hooper was a Land Agent’s Clerk working for Matthew Gray at Chrishall Grange estate when he enrolled for military service in November of 1915. He was called forward for service in April of 1916 and commissioned the following March. He was killed at the battle of the Somme in January 1918.

Eustace was single and aged 25 when he died. In a reference when he signed up, Matthew Gray commented that he was an ‘excellent young man’. Working for Matthew Gray, Eustace as a Land Agent’s Clerk was probably helping with supervising the farming of Chrishall Grange Estate and collecting rents from the farm labourers or tenants. He was probably new to the estate as he is not listed on the 1911 census.

He is also listed on the war memorial at Windrush in Gloucestershire.
