Heydon Church and Rev John Horseman

Heydon-Church-pre-1940

One of the vicars of Heydon was the Rev John Horseman. Rev Horseman came to Heydon where he married and settled on 10th October 1810. It seems that he was well loved in his parish and beyond. He would walk to Cambridge with a book in hand to read and a bag over his shoulder carrying a change of clothes and would stay in the city for a day or two before returning.

He appears in the Chrishall church records several times taking funeral services.

After over 30 years of service to Heydon, Little and Great Chishill he died on 18th August 1844.

On his death a book of poems and sonnets was published which contains not only poems written by him, but a short biography of his life by his friend Archdean Corbett. This publication had various subscribers, several of whom were from Chrishall as follows:

Mr William Brand (1 copy)

Mr David Ellis and Mr George Ellis from Chrishall Grange (1 copy each)

Rev Godfrey Everth (1 copy, and who was inspired to publish his own book of poetry some five years later)

Mr James Pigg (1 copy)

Mr Thomas Wilkerson (1 copy)

Mr James Willis (1 copy)

The full text of this book is available to read here at the HathiTrust Digital Library.
