On the larger copy of the first image below, for example, you can see two people walking down the footpath towards The Butts. Notice how in the older photographs you can see that the church had a full spire. It also seems that the outside of the church would have been rendered at one point making it look very different from today.
What happened to the spire ? Phil Stigwood
The tower was restored in 1914 and for some reason they took the spire down and replaced it with the little spirelet that is there today. Whether it had become unsable or not I don’t know. And I’m sure I have been told that the current arrangement was “only temporary” – in 1914… They had other things to think about then of course. I presume it would be recorded in the Church minutes somewhere. If I come across any further information I will let everyone know.
