Exploring Historical Field Names on Our Village Map

Below is a map of the field names traced so far. You can zoom in and out of the map using the plus and minus signs on the bottom left. This is just the names. The stories will come in due course!

Names change over the years of course. Many of the names on this map come from the 1808 enclosure agreement and earlier surveys of the village, plus information from wills, conveyances, church terriers etc.

I sadly couldn’t make the talk on field names, but can you tell me from what era these names are from?
I ask as the currently used names around Chrishall Grange are not the same.
    Thanks

Hi Mark – yes the names do change over the years of course. Most of these names are from the 1808 enclosure agreement but many go back to a 1592 survey of the village and Debden Field near Chrishall Grange is one of those.
