Jim Cranwell b c1870. A note on the back of the photo says it was he, and not his brother William who carried his donkey and cart over the toll gate at Newport to avoid paying the toll that passing through the gate would have entailed. Later photographs certainly show him to have been a strong man. He appears in the 1881 Census aged 11 years – but not in either the 1891 or 1901 census returns.
