As yet we know very little about this lovely old image of Kemps, the large house on the right of the picture, and the end of Brick Row. We’re looking for a date and to be able to identify the people in the photograph.

According to the Chrishall Scrapbook the cottage at the end of Brick Row, i.e. the cottage end on to the road in this picture, was once a Dame School, so is this the reason for several children being in the photograph?

Mrs Guiver and Mrs Waller, Chrishall.Kemps was the home of the Guiver family. Their name often comes up in village articles. Mrs Guiver was President of the WI at one point, and a good one apparently as is commented on the back of this photograph of her. Mrs Guiver is on the left and Mrs Waller on the right.

A Miss K Guiver is credited with being in the first performance ever put on by the WI and in ‘Local Quotes‘ a tale is related about James Guiver who lived at no 1, Brick Row (the house in the photograph mentioned above). Apparently he got so annoyed at people leaving his front gate open that he replaced it with a style so people could only climb in to get to his front door!

There is also a James Guiver listed as one of the first trustees of the new Chapel building (now the village hall) and we can see from the census returns that the Guiver family was in the village for several generations.
